Sound and Music is the national charity for new music in the UK. Our mission is to maximise the opportunities for people to create and enjoy new music.
Our education work aims to nurture and promote the musical creativity and compositional skills of children and young people. We do this through a programme of work that includes providing opportunities for children and young people to create and compose their own music, continuing professional development for music educators and the provision of resources. We also work at a national level to increase the awareness and understanding of the value of composing and creativity.
Go Compose is Sound and Music’s national programme supporting young people to compose their own music, offering opportunities to work alongside professional composers and musicians to help develop their musical voice. We aim to develop a national network of progression opportunities by working with a diverse list of partner organisations including music education hubs, university music departments, professional ensembles, music charities and youth organisations.
In the past, Sound and Music worked with partner organisations to deliver three Go Compose projects, each of which specialised in engaging young people who face barriers to participation due to their educational background, disability or gender.
Each Go Compose project is unique, shaped by the project leaders and by the young composers themselves, but they all introduce young people to new and creative approaches to composing, including writing for different instruments, creating new electronic instruments and using sampling software.
This project was generously funded by Youth Music.
